Field trip!

Awesome day! And we made it back before the rain fell!!

April 19

Happy Easter weekend!!! I hope this finds you well enjoying some warm sun and time with your families! Hopefully the above link attached correctly…if so take a moment to watch this beautiful message…it just warms your heart!

Can you believe how quickly this year is going? We have a lot to get through in our short time left but we are also going to try and soak in some great quality time together as our first grade family!

If you haven’t turned in your permission slip for our April 29th field trip please do so soon.

Mark your calendars for Friday, May 9 in the PM for the Mother’s Day tea…you won’t want to miss it!

They received their Minecraft app and will begin to work on their challenges with their 4th grade partner on Wednesday. We are excited to get going and will be working on collaboration, problem solving, critical thinking and components of our grade level common core curriculum. We have discussed rules and they will be signing a contract. They know that they must stay in the creative world. With parents okay they can create a world at home as well. If they break the rules of the contract the app will be deleted from their device and they won’t get it back…ouch!

Tuesday, April 22 is Earth Day…one of my favorites! So weather permitting we will be picking up trash at the high school, digging in the dirt for critters, eating our lunch outdoors, reading outside and watching a little Disney earth. Please have your child wear comfy clothes that can get dirty!

Happy Easter!!!

April 15

Hello families!

I hope this finds you well! Hopefully you were able to enjoy a little down time with your families last week as we all recharged our batteries to get us through the remainder of the year. It flies by from here!

I wanted to touch base with you on a couple of things:

April 29th: all day field trip to outdoor discovery center in Holland
The note came home in their folders today.

May 9th: 1st grade Mother’s Day Tea!
All moms are invited in as your child will be honoring their mom’s and hosting a tea. This takes place in the afternoon on that Friday.

You may have heard a little buzz about this from your child as they have been extremely excited to make this happen. I have been collaborating with Betsy Kipling our STEM teacher and Noelle York a 4th grade teacher about this opportunity. Today we were given the go ahead and the apps have been purchased by the district for both classrooms. They should be pushed to our devices in the next 24 hours. They will be working in teams of 4 which consist of 2 first graders and 2 fourth graders. They will have certain guidelines and tasks to complete in building a world together. They will be working in the creative world. We will incorporate problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration and components of our grade level curriculum. They will then present and share their work with other classrooms in the building. We are super excited to be given this opportunity and to give it a try! A letter will be coming home this week outlining the project.

We are beginning our unit on An Animal’s Life. Our monarch caterpillars should arrive tomorrow!

We have been working on telling time to the hour and half hour and today began attributes of shapes.

Before break we were working on opinion writing pieces. We will send some home for you to see. Today we began writing realistic fiction and will eventually be working on writing a series!

Enjoy this bright sun and hopefully soon a little warm weather!!!!

March 28

Hello families!

Today we celebrated the end of march is reading month by watching The Trumpet of the Swan with all first graders…so fun!

In math you have been seeing subtraction mad minutes come home. They are given 1 minute to answer as many problems as possible. They are graphing their own progress and comparing their scores to the last time they took it. They can practice fact fluency on Mad Math and fact master at home. My hope is they reach 20 by June.

We have been working on telling time and have practiced to the hour and half hour. Please reinforce this skill at home by asking them to read the time.

If you have not sent me a Mother’s Day photo please do so by Monday. You could always take it on your child’s iPad and I can pull it off.

Please remember we have off next Friday to begin our spring vacation.

Have a beautiful weekend!

March 21

Hello families!
Tomorrow is Jeffers read-a-thon day. We are inviting the first graders to bring in a towel and flashlight to build a tent to read in. We will be doing some other fun activities during the day. The wonderful Mrs. Core will be our guest teacher as I will be out for the day. I am heading to Chicago to pick up our son Connor from the airport as he is heading home from South Africa. It has been really amazing sharing this experience with the class as he has sent us photos and we have had the opportunity to face time him a couple of times. So unbelievable for him to show some of us the streets of Cape Town as we were sitting in a classroom in spring lake…amazing!

Report cards will be coming home on Monday. Enjoy the sunshine and your weekend!!!
